Virginia entrepreneurs headed by Sephus and Jack Randolph bought this land (some of the highest in the state) from the Chickasaw Indians.

The county was organized in 1836. Holly Springs was incorporated in 1837 and had 10 schools, 40 lawyers and 36 doctors, where only 2 years before it had been wilderness. Holly Springs was thought of as the capital of north Mississippi at the time.

When the War Between the States started, General U.S. Grant chose the town to be his headquarters because of the railroad, which had been built in 1857, connecting the north with the south.
